‘Have I Got GNUs For You’ is the 29th annual collection from South Africa’s legendary cartoonist Zapiro. Every one of his incisive annuals has been a best-seller and this one will be no exception as it captures yet another white-knuckle ride of a year for South Africa and the world. With his eagle eye, his sharp pen and his biting humour, Zapiro has a unique place in our culture and he has, once again, found plenty to cartoon about. ‘The election, with what seemed like a thousand parties, was the big political story, along with Zuma stealing the ANC’s spear symbol and many of its voters. It all led to the chaotic GNU Dawn which became a central theme of the book. And any country where Gayton McKenzie becomes the Arts Minister and John Hlophe ends up serving on the JSC which sacked him as a judge, remains ripe for my kind of satire. Internationally, it’s been Gaza, Ukraine and Trump among the big stories to cartoon’.

Zapiro himself made news (and not for the first time) when the Film and Publications Board tried to slap a 16-age limit on the biographical documentary, The Showerhead.
